Common Questions

What are sanding discs used for?

Sanding discs are used for smoothing, shaping, and finishing various materials including wood and metal. They remove material, eliminate scratches, prepare surfaces for painting or coating, and achieve desired surface textures in manufacturing and repair applications.

How do I choose a sanding disc?

Choose based on your material type, desired finish, tool compatibility and job in hand. Consider grit size (coarse 40-80 for heavy removal, medium 100-150 for general sanding, fine 180+ for finishing), disc diameter to match your sander, and backing type (PSA or Hook & Loop) for your equipment, at Ultrimax we have a variety of different sanding discs and grit options. If you have any questions on which sanding disc you should be using, contact our Total Paint Shop Support Team for more information.

What is a PSA sanding disc?

PSA stands for Pressure Sensitive Adhesive. These discs have a sticky backing that adheres directly to the sander's pad when pressed on. They provide strong attachment and are typically more economical than Hook & Loop alternatives. Our PSA sanding discs come with an open, hole-free design which prevents clogging during use.

Which is better Hook & Loop or PSA sanding discs

Hook & Loop discs offer easier disc changes and reusability, making them ideal for frequent grit switching. PSA discs provide stronger adhesion and better value for extended use with the same grit.

What does the P stand for on sanding discs?

The "P" stands for "FEPA" (Federation of European Producers of Abrasives) grading system. P-grades (P80, P120, P240, etc.) indicate grit size - the higher the number, the finer the grit. This European standard ensures consistent particle sizing across manufacturers.

How long do sanding discs last?

Lifespan varies by material, grit, and application intensity. Typically, 15-30 minutes of continuous use for aggressive sanding, or several hours for light finishing work. Replace when the disc becomes clogged, worn smooth, or stops cutting effectively.
